T3W6: English Continuous Writing 4

Dear students,
Please refer to the checklist and sample story below to help you with the planning of your continuous writing.

Ensure that your planning is:

  1. Logical
  2. Short but clear
  3. Built-up should show the action by your character
  4. Problem should be the result of the action
  5. What solution to solve the problem happened.

Introduction

Details of the paragraph.

  • Begins the story with a sound or a character speaking related to the main storyline.
  • Provides details of setting – the who, when and where of the story
  • Introduces characters and describe them, how they look like and how are they involved in the story.

  • “Ring!” The school bell echoed around the school as happy students dashed excitedly out of their classrooms.
  • Who – Lily and Patricia
  • When – After school
  • Where – Outside Elias Park Primary School
  • Lily – A soft-spoken girl who was Patricia’s best friend. The eye-witness who was with Patricia during the unfortunate accident.
  • Patricia – A mischievous girl who often ignored her friends’ and teachers’ advice. Patricia was the girl who dashed across the road.

Built-up

Includes problems. (What was/were the problem/s?  What happened next?)

  • Patricia was supposed to head home after school because she had a SwimSafer Stage 3 stage.
  • However, Patricia and Lily stayed back to play in the library.
  • Lily was with her and reminded her that she had a test at 3.30 p.m.
  • She forgot about the time and had to rush home.

Problem

  • What was the problem? Describe it in details.
  • How did the characters feel when the problem happen
  • Describe the feelings of the character.

  • She did not cross the road responsibly despite Lily’s warning.
  • Dashed across the road and was knocked down by an incoming car.
  • Flew above the car and was further hit by a lorry behind the car.
  • Lily was shocked.
  • Patricia was unconscious.

Solution

  • How was the problem solved? Describe it in details.
  • How did the characters feel when the problem was resolved?

  • The driver immediately called for an ambulance to send Patricia to the nearest Changi General Hospital.
  • Patricia was unconscious for hours.
  • Woke up and could not feel her legs.
  • Lily was sobbing uncontrollably because she blamed herself for not stopping Patricia in time.
  • Patricia’s parents were all crying.
  • Patricia was in a state of shock and could not register what had happened to her.

Conclusion

  • How the story ended?
  • What happened to all the characters? Include the feeling of the main character about the story.
  • Share a future action that the main character learnt.

  • Patricia spent another few months in the hospital to recover fully.
  • She continued to visit the occupational therapist to help her in controlling her upper body movement better so that she could use the wheelchair well.
  • Patricia learnt about the importance of personal responsibility. Road safety is not something that we should laugh about.

Being Responsible

———-“Ring!” The school bell echoed around Elias Park Primary School as exhausted students dashed excitedly out of their classrooms at 2 p.m. It had been a long day for everyone as exam was around the corner. Everyone was busy doing endless practice papers to prepare for their SA2. Lily and Patricia decided to spend time in the library to relieve some stress accumulated over the hectic weeks.

———-“Let’s play hide and seek in the library,” suggested Patricia to Lily. The two girls happily played in the library without realising that the time had passed so quickly. “Oh no! It is 3.30 p.m. Pat, don’t you have your SwimSafer Stage 3 test today at 4 p.m.?” reminded Lily worriedly. Patricia looked at the clock and panicked. Her test was at Toa Payoh Swimming Complex, a long way from Pasir Ris! The two girls quickly grabbed their bags and ran out of the library.

———-At the traffic junction, Patricia grew impatient while waiting for the traffic light to turn green. She lunged forward but was held back by Lily. Lily reminded Patricia that dashing across the road was a very dangerous act. Patricia ignored her advice because she was in such a mad rush. She dashed across the road. Out of nowhere, a blue Honda car came towards her at full speed. She flew above the car and was further hit by a lorry behind the car. She fell hard onto the floor. Everything happened in a blink of an eye. Lily was petrified at the sight of an unconscious Patricia who was lying in a pool of her own blood. The two drivers immediately ran to Patricia and called for the ambulance. The next few hours were probably the most frightening experience of Lily’s and Patricia’s lives.

———-Patricia was sent to the nearest Changi General Hospital. She remained unconscious for hours. She woke up to find herself surrounded by a group of teary eyes people. “Are you okay? I’m so sorry,” cried Lily controllably. Patricia tried to move her legs but to her horror, she could not feel them at all. “Don’t move please. Pat, Mummy has to tell you something. You have severely injured your spine and can no longer walk for the rest of your life,” cried Patricia’s mum as she broke the devastating news to her own daughter. Patricia was in a state of shock and could not register what had happened to her.

———-Months went past and Patricia continued to spend her days in the hospital going through rehabilitation. The accident had been a very precious lesson for Patricia. She had learnt that safety is everyone’s responsibility because the consequence can be unthinkable. Now, she is left suffering from the consequence of her own irresponsibility.

Term 3 Week 2 Maths Updates

Dear Parents of Miss Chua’s Maths Class,

We did mainly on multiplying a decimal by tens, hundreds and thousands and dividing a decimal by 10, 100 and 1000. I would say that the children are doing very well in these two areas. They could have done even better if they were able to spot their mistakes.

Next week, we will move on to dividing a decimal by tens, hundreds and thousands and converting of measurement. They will be required to do long division hence will need practice in this area.

This week there is no homework unless they have not completed worksheet 3 due to health check up.

Here is a good video which explains the easier way to divide decimal by 10, 100 or 1000 and it teaches how to check if the answer is correct as some students had feedback that they faced difficulty remembering which direction to shift the decimal point.

Video link:

Thank you.

Have a good weekend!

Miss Chua

Term 3 Week 2 Class and English Updates

Dear parents and students,

Here are some updates and plans for the upcoming semester. As we all know, the semester 1 results were not very ideal for many. Thus, most students are now down for their remedial sessions on Monday and Friday. I’ll be posting up the schedule on the blog soon. Thus, if you have lost the schedule, you can always refer to the class blog. Please do give me some time.

English (Areas of focus)

  1. Situational Writing (Formal format)
  2. Oral Conversation
  3. English Paper 2 Booklet A (Grammar and Vocabulary items)

These three will be the main areas of focus this semester. Thus, parents who are personally supervising your child can also focus on these areas.

This weekend’s reading task

Students are to read up more about expository text. This is a NEW text type on top of the procedural text and narrative text that the students are familiar with.

  • Meaning of expository – Intended to explain or describe something.
  • Expository text – The main purpose of expository text is to inform or describe a topic of focus, supported with facts and evidence.

What is expository text about? (Click on the link below)

http://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-expository-writing-definition-examples.html

How to write expository text?

I will be asking some questions in class next week.

  1. What is expository text?
  2. What are the parts of an expository text?
  3. What are the suitable topics for an expository text?

That’s all! Thank you!

Cheers,

Miss Joreen Lee
